Arosa liest - Writer in Residence
A witness report from two crime scenes.
The life journey of a correspondent from a politically chaotic and economically stagnant Middle East to the emerging East Asia. This includes personal impressions of key moments in global politics, political figures, as well as possible lessons that Europe can learn from the two such extremely different developments.
Ernst Herb studied philosophy and literary studies at the universities of Toronto and Paris after completing an apprenticeship as a mechanic in St. Gallen. In the mid-1980s, he worked as a freelance journalist for, among others, the "Neue Zürcher Zeitung" and Swiss Radio. Between 1988 and 2002, Ernst Herb reported from Cairo and later from Tehran for a number of well-known German-speaking media outlets on Middle Eastern politics, economics, and culture. Since 2003, he has lived in Hong Kong, where he reported on Asian financial markets for "Finanz und Wirtschaft" until 2020. Since then, he has been writing, among other things, for the "Feuilleton der Frankfurter Allgemeinen Zeitung" and is concurrently working on a book about the cultural backgrounds of the genocide committed by the Cambodian "Khmer Rouge" against their own people between 1975 and 1979.
After Herb's lecture, journalist and author Georg Brunold will pose questions as the moderator of the evening, to which the audience is also invited.
