Siedlungsführung Lantsch, St. Cassian und Tschividains
General Information
The Church of St. Cassian was first mentioned in 1405 and still shapes the local landscape today. After a late Gothic reconstruction, it was consecrated again in 1513 – a sign of its long and eventful history. Directly opposite the church is the residential and barn house of the former farm, which reminds of the area's earlier agricultural use.
To the west of the canton road, about 30 meters from the location of today's chapel, the foundations of two churches and 24 burial fields from the early Middle Ages (6th and 7th centuries) were discovered. These were probably predecessor churches dedicated to Saint Stephen. The significant archaeological site is marked by a wooden cross with stone slabs – a quiet yet striking reminder of the early settlement of the region.
Also, the Caltgera da Tschividains tells of early architecture: For the construction of the settlement Tschividains, the available materials at the time, such as wood, stone, sand, and burnt limestone, were used. In a lime kiln, the limestones were fired over several days at temperatures between 850 and 1000 degrees Celsius – genuine craftsmanship with fire and patience.
The Maiensäss settlement of Tschividains is located within the municipality of Lantsch/Lenz and comprises 17 historical Maiensäss buildings. Today, they mainly serve for recreation but have preserved their original character. With the establishment of the special zone Tschividains, the municipality has created a sustainable and legally binding foundation that allows for careful expansion and the preservation of traditional building styles. During a visit, we discover two of these buildings in an idyllic location – places that breathe history while providing space for tranquility and enjoyment of nature.
