Already during the Roman times and throughout the Middle Ages, a road led from Chur through the Churwaldner Valley and over the Septimer Pass to Italy. As a main postal station with horse exchanges, Churwalden was well connected with the main towns along the Engadine route as well as with St. Gallen, Zurich, Basel, and Lucerne. The spa guests enjoyed the pure, invigorating alpine air, flavored with the balsam scent of the spruce and larch forests, along with the excellent cow and goat milk whey. This marked the beginning of a tourist spa. Today, Churwalden is the gateway to the holiday destination Arosa - Lenzerheide. The traditionally pure alpine air also favors the production of dried meat, as the cradle of Bündnerfleisch and Salsize is located in Churwalden.
